The start of a new year always bring with it new hope and new aspirations. And that is a good thing. These aspirations set us on the right footing for meaningful growth and achievement. Therefore many of us would think about what we hope to achieve for the new year. If you are like most people, the Christmas season is also a season of reflection, a reflection of how the year has been and a reflection of what you would like the coming year to be. You place your hope in a year that would see better things for you and your loved ones, hope in doing things differently and hope that much can be achieved. And rightfully you deserve all you aspires to become! New Year Resolutions are good things. It put us in a position where we can decide what we want and take action towards making these goals a reality. The all important question then is how can I make my new year resolution work for me? Here are a few keys to help you do just that! Key number 1: Ask yourself "Do I REALLY REALLY want this for myself?". Is the goal something you truly want or something that others want but you felt compels to have the same? If it's the latter, then find something that deep down inside you truly want to have. Once you have identified what you really want ask yourself "what is the purpose of wanting it?" and list them down. The key here is to be congruent, if something is not congruent you will have difficulty achieving it. Key number 2: Have a clear description of what you want to achieve. What would you see when you achieve your resolution? Describe in vivid details all the things you will see when you have it (i.e. wearing the dress you have always wanted to or the color of the car..etc). What will you hear when you have it? List all the great comments you are going to get when you have your goals (i.e. Congratulations! You look amazing!..etc). What will you feel when you have it? Identify how you will feel - as in really feel the feeling - when you achieve it (i.e. sense of awe or pure happiness...etc). Having clear description of your desired goals will allows your mind to have a reference to work towards. This is often an overlooked aspect of new year resolutions. Key number 3: Make 2 lists. First list down all the resources you need to achieve your desired outcomes. Then from the first list, create a second list of what resources you currently already have and find ways to get those missing resources. Resources includes people who have achieved similar goals, information on how to get the goals, if skill is a factor then go get trained on it. Your ability to identify the resources for reaching your resolution will make the achievement that much easier.
Key number 4: What is the first step to take? The all important key in making your new year resolution work for you is to take action towards it. Nothing beats taking action because only actions produces results. The best ship will never reach its destination if it doesn't set sail. So identify your first step, for best results make the first step a baby step! If your goals is weight loss, your first step should be just a 10 minutes evening walk. Then take the next step and the next and the next. Soon you will realised that with every steps you are getting nearer to your target. Have these 4 elements in your new year resolution and you will be quite surprised of how fast you are getting towards your goals, in fact you might even have to make new ones!! May this year be filled with inspiration for your growth, motivation for your action and dedication for your achievement. Happy New Year.
